Florida Birds

Here are some shots of Florida Birds. They were taken on both the east and west coast of Florida. Some of our favorite places for seeing and photographing them include, Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Green Cay, Merritt Island, Corkscrew Swamp, Six Mile Slough, Ding Darling, the Everglades, various botanical gardens, water treatment plants and beaches, our favorite being the beach on Sanibel Island.

Sanibel beach is noted for its shelling. If you decide to spend some time there during the winter, it’s best to book your room months ahead in advance.

Tri-colored Heron in Ding Darling. They are white underneath which helps to distinguish them from Reddish Egrets and Little Blue Herons.

The only place to find Limpkin in the USA is Florida. I took this shot in the Everglades many years ago.

Roseate Spoonbills are fairly common at Ding Darling NWP. We also had one roosting in a tree at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. This photo was taken on Merritt Island in January 2016

The Reddish Egret is becoming endangered, as less and less are being seen.

Green Herons seemed to be more common on this trip. We saw them in several locales.

This Purple Gallinule was very cooperative in letting me photograph him. He came out in the midday sun, which makes for harsh shadows but good color.
